Loyola at a Glance
All issues of The Maroon now available online
March 1, 2013
Thanks to a project led by J. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Library faculty and staff at Loyola University New Orleans, every single issue of The Maroon newspaper—dating back to its inception in 1923—is now available online. Anyone can search the 1,679 issues of The Maroon for specific people, places and events; save images to their own computers; and share them with friends and family.
“The papers aren’t just of interest to those looking for the history of Loyola—as artifacts of almost 100 years of history, they also contain drawings and advertisements, sports news, photos of students, faculty and staff, and so much more,” said Elizabeth Kelly, Loyola digital initiatives librarian.
The project was made possible by generous donors including ExxonMobil Corporation, Leo R. McLean, Michelle M. Fonseca, Gary G. Hymel, Carrol P. McBride, the Microsoft Corporation, Florence R. Largay, John P. Reilly, Edward M. Ruane, Paul F. Steen and Irvine J. Vidacovich Jr.
One issue of the newspaper from May 27, 1927, includes an article about Eugene Stanley, a Loyola law professor who was chosen as the Orleans Parish District Attorney. The featured photo for that issue, “Lady Tonight,” highlights Loyola student Malcolm Schwarzenbach dressed as female character Virginia Bullivant for the four-act play, “Grumpy.
“The importance of this project can’t be overstated. The older newspaper issues especially have deteriorated quite a bit over the years,” Kelly said. The digitization process not only captures the images of the newspapers, it also prevents further damage to the hard copies from handling, according to Kelly.
More information and additional digital collections are available on the Monroe Library’s Digital Archives page.
