Loyola hosts viewing of award-winning 'Journey of the Universe' film
March 1, 2013
Exploring the epic scientific and historic drama from the Big Bang to the effect people have on the planet today, Loyola University New Orleans will screen the award-winning documentary “Journey of the Universe” March 9. The program is part of the Biever Guest Lecture Series.
The film screening is set for 9 a.m. in Miller Hall, room 114. It is sponsored by Loyola’s Twomey Center for Peace through Justice, Loyola’s Institute for Ministry, Loyola’s Environmental Studies Program, the Carmelite NGO and Marianites of Holy Cross. The event is free and open to the public.
Filmed in high definition, the story begins on the Greek island of Samos and takes viewers on a journey through time and space—including a midnight sail into the star-lit Aegean Sea—to illustrate the 14-billion-year process of the origin of the universe.
Produced and written by historian of religions Mary Evelyn Tucker, Ph.D., along with co-writer and evolutionary philosopher Brian Thomas Swimme, Ph.D., the film brings together scientific discoveries in astronomy, geology, biology, ecology and the humanities. “Journey of the Universe” was inspired by the work of the late Thomas Berry, a historian of world religions, who examined how the world’s religions explained the creation of the world and the scientific story of the universe’s emergence.
As seen on PBS, “Journey of the Universe” won a 2012 San Francisco/Northern California regional Emmy Award for best documentary. The film, directed by Patsy Northcutt and David Kennard, was made in collaboration with a group of scientists, scholars and filmmakers.
