James Carter String Quartet performs March 2

February 22, 2013

Following the rousing success of their inaugural performance last fall, the James Carter String Quartet will return to the stage Saturday, March 2 for a free concert as part of the Montage Fine and Performing Arts Series at Loyola University New Orleans.

The event is open to the public and will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall, located in the Communications/Music Complex on Loyola’s main campus.

The quartet’s name honors Loyola University New Orleans President Emeritus James Carter S.J., Ph.D., an avid supporter of the arts, particularly of Loyola’s College of Music and Fine Arts. Performers include faculty members Rachel Jordan, violin; Bruce Owen, viola; Allen Nisbet, cello; and Amy Thiaville, violin.

The program features Michael Hosford’s “String Quartet No. 1” and Dmitri Shostakovich’s “String Quartet No. 7.” By special request from Carter, the group will also perform Cesar Franck’s “Piano Quintet,” with Yui Asano at the piano.

“Fr. Carter has, and continues to be, one of the most effective and valued friends of the college; his presence at our events and close relationship with our community of patrons has been invaluable and is much appreciated. His ongoing dedication to the arts at Loyola has been essential to our continued success,” said Nisbet, associate professor of music. “Our award-winning faculty string quartet bears his name proudly, and we are grateful for all that he continues to do.”

During his tenure as university president, Carter was an outspoken proponent of arts education and demonstrated repeatedly his commitment to Loyola’s unique tradition of excellence in this field. It was under his leadership that the College of Music and Fine Arts was able to increase the number and size of scholarships to attract new students and gain additional funds to enhance its programs.
