December 7, 2012
The 2013 Loyola University New Orleans Hall of Fame will induct Peter Finney, Sr. ‘49 (basketball, 1948-1949, basketball coach 1949-1950, sports information director 1950-1960); Kelly Fridge ‘06 (volleyball 2002-2006); and Michael Gulotta ‘04 (cross-country 2000-2004). A reception and ceremony is set for Jan. 19 from 5:45 to 10 p.m. in the St. Charles room located in the Danna Student Center on Loyola’s main campus. Tickets are $25 and are available online, at the door or by calling 800-798-ALUM. Inductees will also be honored at half time of the men's basketball game at 4 p.m. in the Den.
This year, the Hall of Fame will also honor Erwin Caswell, Jr. ‘56, J.D. ‘70 with the prestigious St. Sebastian Award. He is the chair and a founding member of the James “Big Jim” McCafferty Basketball/Track Scholarship Committee and a supporter of all Loyola athletics. Caswell, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000, was a member of the track team while a student at Loyola.
The annual St. Sebastian Award honors an individual who exhibited outstanding efforts on behalf of Loyola athletes on and off the field. The recipient is also measured by charitable, community, civic and spiritual service to humanity. St. Sebastian was a Christian martyr and patron saint of athletes, whose bravery and faith became legendary in the early church.
The Hall of Fame, created in 1964, honors those in Loyola’s past who have either made history or contributed greatly to their sport. Inductees are selected by a committee on their integrity, sportsmanship and character. Loyola’s Hall of Fame includes Olympic record setters, coaches of national championship teams and school record holders.
