Loyola University New Orleans is among the top universities in the nation for its study abroad participation, according to a report released Nov. 12 by the Institute of International Education. Loyola is ranked 32 among the top 40 master’s institutions in the nation for undergraduate participation in study abroad programs with 35.5 percent of its undergraduate students studying abroad. Loyola increased its study abroad participation this year, jumping from 34 to 32 in this year’s rankings.
The report said the number of international students at colleges and universities in the United States increased by 6 percent to a record 764,495 for the 2011-2012 academic year. U.S. students studying abroad increased by 1 percent nationwide, according to the report.
Locally, international students contributed nearly $155 million to the Louisiana economy in the 2010-2011 school year, according to NAFSA: Association of International Educators. Loyola had 110 international students in fall 2010 and 144 international students in fall 2011.
“It is very exciting and important that so many of our students take advantage of the opportunity to study abroad, gain a different perspective on their academic studies and learn to see the world through the eyes of others. Being among these institutions reflects the support of everyone on campus to provide students with this experience,” said Debbie Danna, J.D. '87, director of Loyola’s Center for International Education.
“Expanding international study and global understanding represents an important university commitment and strategic area, which is rooted in the more than 450-year Jesuit tradition of educating men and women to be with and for others around the world,” said Lydia Voigt, Ph.D., senior vice provost of academic affairs.
The annual Open Doors report by the Institute of International Education is published in partnership with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
