New exhibit, visiting lecturers highlight upcoming events for Department of Art and Design

September 7, 2012

Dutch designer Harmen Liemburg will launch his screen print exhibit, "The Ultralight: Show in a Box," on Thursday, Sept. 20 with a lecture at 12:30 p.m. in Monroe Library, Multimedia Room 2.

The Department of Art and Design at Loyola University New Orleans will open a new exhibit and host two lectures by visiting artists this month. All events are free and open to the public.

Will Hill, a British designer and typographer, will be the first in a series of visiting graphic design lecturers this fall. He will present the lecture “Environmental Typographics and Aspects of Site-Specific Poetics,” on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 12:30 p.m. in Miller Hall, Room 114. A widely-published author, Hill has taught graphic design and related subjects at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, since 1993. Prior to that, he worked as a freelance illustrator, typographer and design consultant.

Dutch designer Harmen Liemburg will launch his screen print exhibit, “The Ultralight: Show in a Box,” on Thursday, Sept. 20, with a lecture at 12:30 p.m. in Monroe Library, Multimedia Room 2. An opening reception for the exhibit, which features 45 original works by Liemburg, will take place at 5 p.m. in the Collins C. Diboll Art Gallery. The lecture and exhibit will illustrate his concept of transforming exhibition spaces through the use of printed matter.

Liemburg is obsessed with screen printing and uses the medium to create unexpected results. His style emphasizes the narrative aspect of images and the occasional beauty of everyday vernacular, like logos and packaging design, that are woven together through collage techniques. In his lectures, Liemburg works to convince students to start working by turning off their computers, but simultaneously demonstrates how digital tools can be linked to analogue printing processes.
