Loyola hosts 24th annual International Piano Competition

Twelve of the world’s preeminent young classical pianists will travel to Loyola University New Orleans next week to compete in the 24th annual New Orleans International Piano Competition. A series of competitive performances, semifinals and a rousing final round, the competition will identify three medalists and award $5,000 to the grand prize winner. All competition rounds will take place in Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall, located in the Communications/Music Complex on the corner of St. Charles Avenue and Calhoun Street.
This year’s competition includes musicians, ages 14-18, from across the globe, including China, Korea, Romania, Russia and the United States. The first round of semifinals will take place Monday, July 23 – Wednesday, July 25, with four contestants each performing 35-minute programs. The second round of the semifinals, on Thursday, July 26 and Friday, July 27, will feature six pianists in 20-minute programs each evening. The finals, on Sunday, July 29, will feature three pianists in 50-minute programs.

The weeklong event is presented by the Musical Arts Society of New Orleans and sponsored by Hall Piano and Steinway and Sons of New York. In addition to performances, the competition also provides a unique educational offering for up-and-coming musicians. Master classes, lectures and panel discussions will take place on the second floor of the Communications/Music Complex in Room 240 and are free and open to the public.
