Loyola administrator recognized for social media outreach
June 15, 2012
Loyola University New Orleans Vice President for Student Affairs and Associate Provost M.L. “Cissy” Petty, Ph.D., is an expert on how to engage students through the use of social media and has been recognized for her effort by the higher education website www.bestcollegesonline.com.
Petty was singled out for her Twitter prowess as one of the nation’s top 50 high-profile higher education administrators who have embraced social media, especially Twitter. She usually tweets around three times a day, and according to Petty, she has always used new technology as a way to interact with students.
“I’ve been sending daily emails to students for about 13 years, so it seemed natural to embrace Facebook and Twitter,” Petty said. “The ‘DP’s Dailies’ that we do at Loyola are usually great quotes or passages that relate to everyday life and have served as informal ways to communicate with students Monday-Friday. Whether it’s by email, Facebook or Twitter, it’s just another way to be engaged with students. I enjoy it, but it never takes the place of my open door policy and having students stop by to say hello.”
According to Petty, the use of social media has been a transformative experience, allowing her to forge new and lasting professional relationships that would not have existed without the new communications technology.
“The depths of relationships that I have developed with other seasoned student affairs professionals from around the country through social media have been amazing,” Petty said. “Also, I am having an impact on young professionals in the field of student affairs by interacting with them on Twitter’s personal learning networks. The ‘twitterverse’ equalizes us in many ways and affords access that might not occur naturally.”
