Loyola philosophy student wins Fulbright Summer Institute Scholarship

Andrew Albert, a junior philosophy major at Loyola University New Orleans, was recently awarded a prestigious 2012 Fulbright Summer Institute Scholarship to study at Newcastle University in Newcastle, U.K. Albert was selected as one of only 50 students from across the United States to be invited to participate in the four-week program, in which he will examine Europe’s current and future role in a global economy.
“We are thrilled that a Loyola student has been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Summer Institute Scholarship,” said Mariette Thomas, study abroad adviser at Loyola’s Center for International Education. “Earning the Fulbright Scholarship is a very tough process. Andrew went through a rigorous and thorough application, screening and interview process just to be considered. Being named one of the 50 American Fulbright Scholars says a lot about Andrew, as well as Loyola University.”
The Fulbright Summer Institute covers a majority of participant costs, including round-trip airfare, tuition and fees and room and board. It also includes visa processing, a comprehensive pre-departure orientation, in-country enrichment opportunities, a re-entry session and an opportunity to join alumni networks.
Nearly 300,000 extraordinary women and men from all over the world have participated in the Fulbright Program, including 12,000 U.S. students that have studied in the U.S.-U.K. study exchange program. Notable program alumni include: novelist Malcolm Bradbury, politician Liam Byrne, Nobel Prize winner and economist Milton Friedman, actor John Lithgow, poet Sylvia Plath and novelist Ian Rankin.
