Loyola student receives unique honor at UK university

May 18, 2012

J.C. Romero, a junior sociology major at Loyola University New Orleans, received the “Exchange Student with the Most Impact Award” at Keele University in Staffordshire, U.K. Romero, who spent the spring 2012 semester studying at Keele, was recognized at the annual Legends of Keele awards ceremony, which highlights student achievement, service and involvement in the community.

Romero has been an active participant in the Keele Student Union, as well as a number of other societies. He also hosted a New Orleans-themed party to give fellow students a little taste of the culture of the Big Easy.

Romero calls his semester in Britain a once-in-a-lifetime experience and encourages future Loyola students to expand their horizons and study abroad.

“I have met so many different types of people, from so many walks of life, from all over the world,” Romero said. “I would have never come in contact with them if I hadn’t come to Keele. It’s an experience that I’ll never forget.”

According to Mariette Thomas, study abroad adviser at Loyola’s Center for International Education, studying abroad is becoming a popular option among students, not only because it offers the opportunity to travel, but also because it is surprisingly affordable.

“With our exchange programs, students can use their financial aid and scholarships. They just pay Loyola tuition and they go abroad,” Thomas said.

Keele’s direct exchange partnership with Loyola means that students can take courses at Keele in all subject areas, instructed in English, with full credit transferring back to Loyola. According to the Center for International Education, 32 percent of Loyola students have explored study abroad opportunities in more than 50 countries.
