Law alumna awarded Ambassadorial Scholarship
May 11, 2012
Loyola University New Orleans College of Law alumna Marlynne Bidos, J.D. ’09, has been awarded an Ambassadorial Scholarship from the Rotary Foundation to obtain a Master of Laws in Information Technology and Intellectual Property at the University of Hong Kong.
The scholarship sponsors undergraduate and graduate students, as well as qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the country where they study and give presentations about their own culture to Rotary clubs and other groups. Only one award was available from Bidos’ district, Rotary District 7230, which encompasses Manhattan, the Bronx, Bermuda and Westchester areas of New York City.
In addition to the scholarship from the Rotary Foundation, Bidos was also recently selected for a Fulbright Fellowship to do research in Ghana next year. She chose the Rotary award because it will provide an opportunity for her to study intellectual property management from a human rights perspective.
“I am honored to be selected for both awards. Both are extremely competitive. Being selected to participate in both fellowships is confirmation that my professional aspiration to build intellectual property systems in nations with low and middle-income economies as a medium for socio-economic change is compelling, feasible and worthwhile,” Bidos said.
“I intend to build upon the legal training I received at Loyola to create country-led intellectual property business solutions that will diminish poverty and ultimately lead to less dependence on foreign aid.”
