Loyola's Bateman Team returns to the national finals

April 27, 2012

The Loyola University New Orleans Bateman Team is once again headed back to the finals of the nation’s premier case study competition for public relations students. Sponsored by the Public Relations Society of America, the Bateman competition attracts the country’s best public relations college programs, challenging students to use classroom education and internship experiences to create and implement a full public relations campaign for a national corporation.

The 2011-12 team, comprised of Maggie Moore, Nhi Tieu, Jack Lien, Wade Kimbro and Alexandra Broussard, successfully created and implemented a specific public relations campaign for United Way Worldwide, designed to address the rising trend of childhood obesity in a sustainable way by advocating for healthy lifestyles through education, outreach and other tactics.

The team conducted research, developed a grassroots public relations plan and held more than a dozen healthy-eating workshops tailored to meet the needs of the surrounding community. According to public relations instructor and team adviser Jeffrey Ory ’97, trying to push through the message of healthy eating in New Orleans during Mardi Gras was a huge challenge.

“In New Orleans, food choice is quite personal, and our team recognized the subject’s sensitivity early on, especially during Carnival,” Ory said. “We encouraged our target audiences to keep food they loved, but make important low-calorie substitutions in their diet and activities wherever possible. It was a tough sell, but we got our point across and were pleased with the results.”

Loyola’s Bateman Team now joins the University of Florida and the University of Maryland-College Park in the national finals, to be held May 17-20 in Minneapolis, Minn. Each group will present their campaign to a panel of United Way, General Mills and PRSA representatives.

Loyola students have dominated the national competition for more than a decade, winning six times and placing in the top three nearly every year, including last year.
