Maroon writers win prestigious national award
April 27, 2012
For the second time in three weeks, several members of Loyola University New Orleans’ student newspaper, The Maroon, have been singled out by one of journalism’s most prestigious organizations. This time, they received top national honors.
The Maroon’s Precious Esie, Holly Combs, Carl Harrison, Leslie Gamboni, Jamie Futral and Masako Hirsch were awarded the first place Mark of Excellence for in-depth reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists for a number of stories written during the fall semester focusing on sexuality on college campuses.
“The ‘Series on Sexuality’ articles were well thought out, nicely planned and perfectly executed, and our students deserve this very prestigious honor for their outstanding work,” said journalism instructor and faculty adviser to The Maroon, Mike Giusti. “What makes this award so special is that it does not distinguish between small and big schools or daily and non-daily student newspapers. The Maroon beat out the University of Maryland and Ohio University to take the top spot. That’s saying something.”
“Loyola has a reputation for producing great journalists, and the recognition by the SPJ is just another example of that,” said Sonya Duhé, Ph.D., director of Loyola's School of Mass Communication.
Just three weeks ago, four Maroon staffers took home honors at the SPJ Region 12 awards ceremony in Lafayette, while two other students were recognized for their outstanding work by the Louisiana/Mississippi Associated Press.
