Loyola students, business professor recognized at national marketing conference

April 13, 2012

The Loyola University New Orleans chapter of the American Marketing Association was honored with the 2011 -12 Outstanding Membership award, and student adviser and marketing professor Michael Pearson, Ph.D., was awarded the AMA Lifetime Achievement award, which has only been presented five times over AMA's 75 years. The awards were a part of the 34th AMA International Collegiate Chapters Conference held in downtown New Orleans late last month.

According to Pearson, the students truly earned the award because of the extraordinary effort expended in reviving a Loyola chapter that had fallen on hard times.

“While I was on sabbatical last year, the group had become relatively inactive and had only a handful of members,” Pearson said. “Loyola has always had a strong chapter and a great reputation. These students breathed new life into the organization and basically went from three or four students to more than 30. That’s quite an accomplishment.”

Now that the Loyola chapter is up and running again, he expects the group to bring back even more awards from next year’s conference.

“Considering the success that our chapter has had in the past, the bar is set pretty high. We want bigger awards,” Pearson added. “We’ve been named the top regional chapter in the past, and that’s the kind of thing we’re really going for. We are out there competing against the University of Texas or Penn State and it’s really cool that the little guys from Loyola go out there, take them on and beat them.”

Pearson, who has been the Loyola AMA chapter adviser for 18 years, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his continued contributions to the AMA over the last three decades.

“It really is wonderful to receive this award,” Pearson said. “I’ve served on the American Marketing Association’s board of directors and even been in charge of running the conference and competitions over the years. So, to be given this award by people I’ve worked with for such a long time is very special to me.”
