Montage series celebrates Loyola's centennial with a weekend of free band, choral concerts
March 30, 2012
In celebration of Loyola’s centennial, the Montage Fine and Performing Arts Series presents three free band and choral concerts on Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15.
On Saturday at 3 p.m., the Loyola Concert Band will perform in Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall, featuring special guest conductor Col. John R. Bourgeois '90, H'05, in the debut of “Ignatian Fanfare,” written exclusively for the centennial by Bourgeois. The fanfare is based on a motive from the Jesuit motto, “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,” (to the greater glory of God).
The concert will also feature a suite from the ballet, “The Statue,” by Charles Fernandez ‘83, an Emmy and Annie award nominee whose concert and chamber works have been featured in such diverse places as Germany, Los Angeles, Sweden and England, and whose music has played a prominent role in multiple films and television series. In addition, the program will include “The Conqueror—March,” a traditional march by alumnus Alex Burtzos ’08, whose compositions have been performed by the Air Force Band of the Rockies, the New Orleans Music Ensemble and the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, among others. Compositions and music by Loyola alumni that are related to Louisiana and New Orleans in particular will also be played, directed by guest conductor Maj. Scott Guidry of the United States Air Force Band.
The Loyola Chamber Singers will perform in two concerts on Sunday. The first, at 3 p.m. in Roussel Hall, will feature the Chamber Singers, Loyola Chorale and NOVA Chorale in a program of Psalm settings from chant to contemporary, including settings by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, René Clausen and many more. At 7 p.m., the Loyola Chamber Singers will be joined by the St. Louis Cathedral Choir and NOVA Chorale in a second performance at the St. Louis Cathedral.
