Journalism competition returns to Loyola

March 2, 2012

The Loyola University New Orleans School of Mass Communication, in conjunction with the New Orleans Press Club, are teaming up again to present the 35th annual Tom Bell Silver Scribe Competition, which features high school students from throughout the New Orleans area competing in a variety of categories related to the communications industry.

This year's competition will take place on Saturday, March 3 at Loyola in the Communications/Music Complex on the corner of St. Charles Avenue and Calhoun Street from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The event also includes workshops in news writing, headline/summary writing, layout, photojournalsim, visual storytelling and critical review.

“We’re very excited to once again have Loyola hosting the Tom Bell Silver Scribe Competition,” said School of Mass Communication Director Sonya Duhé, Ph.D. “Competition and workshops are parts of the building blocks for creating future journalists. They get to compare their work, learn from industry experts and meet working journalists. It’s a great event and we’re glad to be a part of it.”

Loyola and the Press Club are also looking for volunteers to help run the workshops and are asking industry professionals to help judge contests, man tables during a lunch break and interact with the contest participants.
