March 2, 2012

Brooks Zitzmann, LMSW, staff counselor at the University Counseling Center in Loyola University New Orleans’ Office of Student Affairs, has been selected as an Excellence Award Bronze Honoree by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. The NASPA Excellence Awards were created to recognize student affairs practitioners who develop transformative, innovative and data-driven programs. Zitzmann was recognized for her work with Loyola’s Advocacy Initiative in the category of violence education and prevention, crisis management and campus security. She received a personalized certificate and has been featured in NASPA’s monthly newsletter, The NASPA Forum, and on the NASPA website.

M. L. “Cissy” Petty, Ph.D., vice president for Student Affairs and associate provost, commends Zitzmann for her accomplishment, stating, “Through the initiative, Brooks brought together both Jesuit values and university resources to address a significant campus need. The Advocacy Initiative reminds us that being men and women with and for others takes courage and commitment.”

Loyola’s Advocacy Initiative is a collaborative, innovative approach to addressing the long-standing, pervasive issue of sexual violence on college campuses. Sexual assault can have far-reaching impacts on individuals and in communities in many ways. The initiative aims to connect victims who are current students at Loyola University New Orleans to campus and community resources in order to promote emotional and/or physical healing and to increase support for continued academic and interpersonal success. The Advocacy Initiative also provides invaluable training to students, staff and faculty who decide to become sexual assault advocates.
