Loyola, AT&T create emergency scholarship fund
February 10, 2012
Loyola University New Orleans and AT&T Louisiana have jointly created a special scholarship fund that offers financial assistance to students who have undergone an unexpected hardship during the course of the semester and are in jeopardy of not being able to pay their tuition bill. Currently, nearly a third of Loyola students are the first members of their families to go to college.
“In a difficult economy, our financial aid office is increasingly confronted with students whose parents have lost jobs or suffered other financial setbacks. The availability of philanthropic funds in order to address these real human needs is vital to our mission of serving all of our students,” said Sal Liberto, vice president for enrollment management and associate provost.
The $25,000 gift will help improve retention of students by providing financial assistance to students and support to faculty and staff who work directly with them.
"Loyola University holds a special place in my heart, and the scholarships provided to students facing unexpected hardships will make a huge difference in their lives," said State Representative Ray Garofalo, Jr., ’80, J.D. ’92. "I applaud AT&T and Loyola University for ensuring these students can continue their studies at Loyola."
“Expanding educational opportunities for students in our state is crucial to the future of Louisiana,” said AT&T Louisiana President Sonia Perez. “AT&T works every day to help strengthen student success and workforce readiness, and we are proud to support Loyola University in these efforts.”
Liberto says that the scholarship fund is currently being used to help 10 students pay tuition.
