Loyola rolls out centennial plans to the campus in true carnival style
February 10, 2012
Plans for the upcoming centennial year will be revealed to the Loyola University New Orleans campus community in a uniquely New Orleans way – with a Mardi Gras parade party and lots of lagniappe! All students, faculty and staff are invited to a Centennial Campus Carnival on Thursday, Feb. 16 from 12:30 – 2 p.m. in the Peace Quad.
The Centennial Campus Carnival will begin with a second line led by Mardi Gras Indians and a brass band and will include parade floats complete with riders and throws. Additionally, a special king cake will be offered to all attendees as well as centennial giveaways, which will include information about upcoming centennial events. The carnival will act as an internal centennial send-off, preceding the public launch of the centennial celebration in mid-April.
Throughout 2012 and 2013, Loyola will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its founding. The centennial will be observed from April 2012 to May 2013, featuring a number of signature events along with several academic-based events to celebrate and explore Loyola’s history. Centennial events held throughout the year-long celebration will be themed based on one or more of the 12 ideals of a Jesuit education:
- Pursuit of excellence
- Respect for the world, its history and mystery
- Learning from experience
- Contemplative vision formed by hope
- Development of personal potential
- Critical thinking and effective communication
- Appreciation of things both great and small
- Commitment to service
- Linking faith with justice
- Special concern for the poor and oppressed
- International and global perspective
- Finding God in all things
