Montage Series features opera, string quartet masterclasses
February 3, 2012
Loyola University New Orleans’ Montage Fine and Performing Arts Series will offer two free masterclasses with acclaimed musicians this month. Robert Lyall, artistic and general director of the New Orleans Opera Association and artistic director of Opera Grand Rapids, will give an opera masterclass on Friday, Feb. 10 at 4:30 p.m. in Room 230 of the Communications/Music Complex. The Grammy-nominated St. Lawrence String Quartet will offer a masterclass on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m. in Nunemaker Auditorium. Both events are open to the public.
Lyall, who has conducted for opera, symphony and ballet, debuted at Carnegie Hall in 1998 with the New England Symphony. His guest appearances around the world include performances of “Giselle” for Italy’s Arena of Verona and Verdi’s “Nabucco” for the Bulgarian State Opera. In 2002, Lyall made his Russian debut at the Rostov State Musical Theatre for “Madama Butterfly,” which was also nominated for Russia’s leading arts award. Widely known as a judge for international instrumental and vocal competitions, Lyall has also led lecture tours to the world’s major opera houses and summer opera festivals in Europe.
Established in 1989, the St. Lawrence String Quartet has developed an undisputed reputation as a truly world class chamber ensemble. Having been privileged to study with the Emerson, Tokyo and Juilliard String Quartets, the members of the group are passionate educators and have held the position of Ensemble in Residence at Stanford University since 1998. The quartet will work with two string quartets from Loyola University, led by Jean Montés, D.M.A., associate professor of music and director of orchestras.
