Council earns state player of the week honors

Loyola University New Orleans senior guard Keiva Council was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the third time this year. Earlier this week, she also earned the Southern States Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, as well as NAIA National Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.
The 5-foot-8 inch guard from Houston, Texas, had one of her best weeks to date, scoring 25 points at Brewton-Parker College last Friday and 41 points at Southern Polytechnic State University last Saturday. Council is the only player in the program’s history to score more than 40 points more than once in a season. She also scored her 1,500th point against the Lady Hornets last weekend. Council added 15 rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block to her weekend resume.
She is the NAIA’s leading scorer and ranks in the top 50 in an astounding seven categories including: points per game (24.2), total scoring (339), defensive rebounds per game (6.2), field goal percentage (47.5), three-point field goals made per game (2.1), total three-point field goals made (29) and free throw percentage (76.5).
