Loyola English professor pens first novel, presents reading

December 2, 2011

Mark Yakich, a Loyola University New Orleans English professor and poet who recently published his first novel, “A Meaning for Wife,” will present a public reading from the book on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. at the Columns Hotel, 3811 St. Charles Ave. The event is free, open to the public and part of the student-led 1718 Reading Series.

Told in the second person narrative, “A Meaning for Wife” tells the story of a high school English teacher trying to come to terms with the sudden death of his wife, the aging parents he has long avoided and the tribulations of single parenthood.

According to a review by Publisher’s Weekly, “Yakich writes with a poetic economy and a matter-of-fact lyricism, and his masterful use of second person suggests that the narrator is witnessing his life from an outside perspective.”

“A Meaning for Wife” is currently available for purchase at the Loyola University Bookstore, Garden District Books, Octavia Books and online at Amazon.com.

Yakich, co-author of the air travel memoir “Checking In/Checking Out,” will also do a reading and signing for that book at Octavia Books on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 6 p.m., and at the New Orleans Museum of Art on Friday, Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the museum’s centennial celebration.

He is also the author of two poetry collections, “Unrelated Individuals Forming A Group Waiting to Cross” and “The Importance of Peeling Potatoes in Ukraine.”
