Keiva Council sets women's basketball record, wins prestigious awards
December 2, 2011
Loyola senior guard Keiva Council set a women’s basketball team record last Saturday, pouring in 48 points in an 84-80 win against Division I opponent Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La. For her effort, Council was named the Jesuit Women’s National Player of the Week for basketball, as well as the player of the month for November by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. The win against the Lady Demons was Loyola’s first victory against a Division I opponent since 2004.
“We went into that game with the attitude that we were going to win that game. If you do that, you’ve got a shot,” said Kellie Kennedy, Loyola women’s basketball coach. “Keiva had just an unbelievable performance. To do that against a Division I opponent was unbelievable. She didn’t do that against a bad team – that was a credible opponent. It was pretty impressive.”
Council shot 65.2 percent from the floor and 62.5 percent from behind the arch against Northwestern with eight rebounds and four steals. She currently ranks second in the NAIA with 23.9 points per game and is fifth in the country in scoring with 167 points.
“I got into a rhythm, just kept going to the goal and felt like they couldn’t stop me, so I kept doing it,” Council said. “I wasn’t even thinking about how many points I had. My coaches had to tell me after the game. It was a nice bus ride home after the game; we did a lot of studying, but still a nice ride home.”
Loyola is off to a 7-0 start and hopes to extend their perfect streak tonight, when they host No. 21 Shorter in The Den. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
