Alumnus and board of trustees member honored

Loyola University New Orleans trustee Sean C. O’Keefe ’77, H'03, of Arlington, Va., was among the distinguished Syracuse University alumni who were honored with the George Arents Award during the university’s 2011 Orange Central celebration. Syracuse University's highest alumni honor, the Arents Award recognizes alumni who have excelled in their fields.

The Arents Award is presented to individuals who see the world differently and possess the drive to incite lasting, positive change, and have made a difference in their communities and in the world. O’Keefe was honored for excellence in public service.

O’Keefe is CEO of EADS North America, the parent company of some of the most recognized international defense and aerospace units, including Airbus, Eurocopter, Astrium, and Defense and Security. From 2005-08, he was chancellor of Louisiana State University, and was the 10th administrator of NASA from 2001–05. He has served as a presidential appointee on four separate occasions for Secretary of the Navy, comptroller and CFO of the U.S. Defense Department, deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget, and deputy assistant to the president. He received the Distinguished Public Service Award from President George H.W. Bush and then Defense Secretary Dick Cheney in 1993.

O’Keefe earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Loyola University in 1977 and his Master of Public Administration degree from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University in 1978. He has served as an endowed chair at Syracuse University, a professor of business administration at Pennsylvania State University, a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and the International Academy of Astronautics, and a member of the Naval Postgraduate School Board of Advisors.
