The Loyola University New Orleans student chapter of the American Chemical Society has received an honorable mention award for its activities conducted in the 2010-11 academic year. The chapter will be featured alongside other winners in Chemical & Engineering News and inChemistry, the student member magazine. In addition, the chapter will be honored at the 243rd ACS national meeting in San Diego, Calif., in March.

According to Loyola chemistry professor Kurt Birdwhistell, Ph.D., ACS is devoted to service, chemistry and the community. Last year, in addition to potlucks, movie screenings and other social activities, students conducted chemistry demonstrations at Lusher Charter School, distributed Merck pharmaceutical indexes to local high schools, made and served liquid nitrogen ice cream at the Louisiana Children’s Museum during National Chemistry Week, and collaborated with students at Xavier University to plan the undergraduate program for the Southwest/Southeast Regional ACS meeting.

ACS President Nancy B. Jackson, Ph.D., described Loyola faculty advisers Birdwhistell and Thomas Spence, Ph.D., as “exemplary chemistry ambassadors” for their work with the students.

“Professor Birdwhistell and professor Spence’s efforts certainly represent the best in undergraduate science education and mentoring around the country,” Jackson said.

ACS, one of the largest scientific societies in the world, is a congressionally-chartered independent membership organization which represents professionals at all degree levels and in all fields of chemistry and sciences that involve chemistry.
