Champions of Change online event to be held next week

October 7, 2011

Attorney General of the United States Eric H. Holder Jr. will participate in next week's Champions of Change webcast.

The Loyola University New Orleans College of Law is participating in President Barack Obama’s Champions of Change webcast event on Thursday, Oct. 13, from 1-2:30 p.m. This national, online conversation among law students and faculty, public service lawyers, and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, seeks to inspire thousands of future agents of legal change to talk about new ways they can use their law degrees toward the common goal of public service.

It will be held on Loyola’s Broadway campus in the Broadway Activities Center, Room 202, and is free and open to all law students. Undergraduate students may also attend, but must RSVP with Vanassa Douglas at 504-861-5434 or vanassa@loyno.edu

In a statement from the White House Office of Public Engagement and the Access to Justice Initiative at the U.S. Department of Justice, the event “will illustrate the range and quality of public interest lawyers’ accomplishments by honoring 16 exemplary public service champions at the White House, hoping to inspire students to add their talents to the effort to secure basic rights for all Americans.” These champions have helped poor people access health care, assisted consumers struggling with foreclosure, represented children in detention, and ensured that victims of the Gulf Coast oil disaster get their fair share.

Students will learn about the champions’ work, and then Holder will field questions submitted electronically from students in classrooms across the nation about how to use their legal training to help secure equal access to our justice system. The event will showcase those who have devoted their time and expertise to provide much needed legal services to people who cannot afford them.
