Diboll Gallery exhibition benefits Greater New Orleans Foundation Oil Spill Fund
September 30, 2011
Loyola University New Orleans’ Collins C. Diboll Art Gallery recently presented “Handmade Design: Fundraiser for the Gulf Coast Oil Spill,” an exhibition that raised $1,500 for the Greater New Orleans Foundation Oil Spill Fund.
The exhibition, displayed from June to August, was a collaboration between Loyola’s graphic design program and the 2011 TypeCon Conference. Participants from around the world submitted designs that explored the boundaries of type and design, including typographical items made by hand. More than 40 pieces donated by artists, printmakers and designers were featured in the show.
“Knowing that one of the most important international typographic conferences was coming to New Orleans, it was important that Loyola, the only university in New Orleans with a design degree, participate,” said Daniela Marx, associate professor of graphic design. “It took four years of planning to bring the Handmade Typographical Exhibition and silent auction to Loyola, which highlighted the work of some of the world’s most respected typographers.”
“The Greater New Orleans Foundation has a long history of helping out our community in times of need, so it was only natural for us to partner with a group that would ensure 100 percent of our proceeds would get into the hands of those most affected by this disaster,” Marx said.
TypeCon is an annual conference presented by the non-profit Society of Typographic Aficionados, an international organization dedicated to the promotion, study, and support of typography and related arts.
