Loyola professor helps inaugurate new series on medieval biblical interpretation
September 2, 2011
Director of the Loyola Institute for Ministry Tom Ryan, Ph.D., is proud to announce that he is serving as one of the editors of the religious book series “The Bible in Medieval Tradition,” distributed by Eerdmans publishing. The first volume in that series, a translation of selections from medieval commentaries on Galatians, was recently published.
The major intent of the series is to reacquaint the Church with its rich history of biblical interpretation and with the contemporary applicability of this history, especially for academic study, spiritual formation, preaching, discussion groups, and individual reflection.
Each volume focuses on a particular biblical book or set of books and provides documentary evidence of the most significant ways in which that work was treated in the course of medieval biblical interpretation. It also comprises fresh translations of several commentaries. The selections are lengthy and, in most cases, have never been available in English before.
Compared to early church writings, relatively little medieval text has been translated and examined. While medieval interpretations do resemble earlier text, they do not simply replicate them; they are produced at new times and in new situations. As a result, they lend insight into the changing culture and scholarship of the Middle Ages and comprise a storehouse of the era’s theological and spiritual riches that can enhance contemporary reading of the Bible.
Several more volumes are planned for the series including ones on Genesis, the Psalms, the Gospels, Romans, and Revelations.
Loyola at a Glance is written and distributed for the faculty, staff, students and friends of Loyola University New Orleans. It is published by the Office of Public Affairs, Greenville Hall, Box 909, 7214 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70118. (504) 861-5888.
