Loyola Institute for Ministry celebrates alumni accomplishments

September 2, 2011

Loyola University New Orleans Institute for Ministry is proud to announce that two of its distinguished graduates have been appointed to leadership positions in the Archdiocese of New Orleans and Diocese of Baton Rouge.

Alice Hughes, M.R.E. ’90, was appointed director of the Office of Religious Education for the Archdiocese of New Orleans by Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond. She studied in a Loyola Institute for Ministry Extension learning group in Pensacola, Fla. She has nearly 40 years of experience as a religious educator and for the past seven years has served as director of the Office of Faith Formation and Lay Ministry Leadership for the Diocese of Jackson, Miss. Hughes served eight years as a Benedictine sister and is currently a member of the executive board of the Department of Chief Administrators of Catholic Education of the National Catholic Educational Association.

Rhonda Parenton '90, MRE '94, has been named director of the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. She studied on campus in New Orleans. Parenton, who moved to Baton Rouge following Hurricane Katrina, has 30 years of experience as a teacher in ministry, serving as a Catholic school principal and even owning a religious bookstore. According to The Catholic Commentator, the newspaper for the Diocese of Baton Rouge, she hopes to use her new position to build a partnership with parents to help them become more informed and excited about the faith, which she hopes they will pass down to their children.

Tom Ryan, Ph.D., director of the Loyola Institute for Ministry, was very positive about these two appointments. “They affirm the quality of our programs, both on campus and in extension. We look forward to continuing to be of service to the Archdiocese of New Orleans and the Diocese of Baton Rouge in meeting their educational and formational needs.”
