The Maroon named one of nation's top three non-daily college newspapers
August 12, 2011
The awards and recognition keep coming for The Maroon. Just weeks after winning several awards at the New Orleans Press Club’s annual awards banquet, the Loyola University New Orleans student newspaper was named one of the nation’s top three non-daily college newspapers by the Society for Professional Journalists.
In April, the paper received the coveted Mark of Excellence Award by the SPJ and was recognized as the region’s top non-daily college paper. This award earned them a spot in the national competition against 11 other universities.
"Being a national finalist for the Mark of Excellence Award is so exciting for me and our staff,” said student media adviser and journalism instructor Michael Giusti. “Our journalists juggle their newspaper duties, class schedules and personal lives. To get such a high honor, placing us in the top three nationwide, is so gratifying. It is great motivation as we gear up for another year of great journalism."
Marquette University took top honors, while Loyola University and the University of Maine were named national finalists.
