School of Nursing receives federal grants

July 15, 2011

The Loyola University New Orleans School of Nursing was recently awarded two grants worth nearly $1.5 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The School of Nursing received a $985,000 grant to support student loans for nursing doctoral students, as well as those studying to be nurse practicioners. This grant is a part of the Nurse Faculty Loan Program, which is a federal program created to pay up to 85 percent of graduate nursing degree loans. In return for the loan forgiveness, the student must return for four years of fulltime employment as a faculty member in a school of nursing within the United States upon graduation.

“Currently, there is a shortage of qualified faculty teaching in our nation’s nursing schools and this grant is a real solution to that problem,” said Ann Cary, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.N., director of Loyola’s School of Nursing. “Last year we were able to fund 44 students and this year, because of the size of the grant, we can fund double the amount of students.”

The School of Nursing also received a second grant of $434,000 that will be used provide salaries for faculty, upgrade equipment, support national advisory board activities, and hire consultants.

The deadline for early admission to the 2011-12 DNP program is set for Nov. 1, 2011.
