Philosophy professor celebrates golden jubilee
July 1, 2011
Philosophy professor the Rev. Stephen C. Rowntree, S.J., Ph.D., will be honored this month at a special mass commemorating his 50 years of service to the Society of Jesus. The mass will take place on July 31, 2011, the feast day of St. Ignatius of Loyola, when the Jesuits of the New Orleans Province gather for the Jesuit Jubilee Mass at 3 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in New Orleans. After Mass, the celebration will continue with a reception at The Roosevelt New Orleans, featuring live jazz and a menu of favorite southern dishes and drinks.
Fr. Rowntree was ordained in 1975 and began his full-time teaching career at Loyola in 1976 as assistant professor. From 1981 to 1992 he directed the Jesuit Center for Academic Formation, which coordinated the studies of Jesuit Scholastics and Brothers attending Loyola. In 1993 he answered a call for volunteers and began a four-year integrated program of philosophy, humanities, and religious studies for English-speaking African Jesuit seminarians.
As a missionary, Rowntree was one of the founding fathers of Arrupe College in Harare, Zimbabwe, where he taught a variety of courses in ethics, political, and social philosophy. He returned to Loyola in 2001 and in 2006 held the Donald I. MacLean Chair in the College of Arts and Sciences (a chair for visiting Jesuits) at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.
Rowntree earned his Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Spring Hill College, a Master of Divinity from Weston College, a Master of Theology from Harvard Divinity School and his doctorate in philosophy from Fordham University. Rowntree is originally from Lawrence, Massachusetts.
