Loyola students donate to Alabama relief effort

May 27, 2011

The Office of Student Affairs recently provided support to the tornado victims of the Tuscaloosa community. After a combined effort to collect donations during Greek Week and the bi-annual Mass and Pancakes event, Residential Life and Co-Curricular Programs collected $750 and donated it to the Acts of Kindness Fund at the University of Alabama.

Loyola fraternities and sororities accepted donations during Greek Week and raised more than $400. During Mass and Pancakes, students had the opportunity to donate $1 to the Acts of Kindness Fund in exchange for a commemorative Mass and Pancakes T-shirt. By the end of the hour-long event, they had collected more than $250 for the relief fund. Anonymous donors also contributed to the fundraising effort.

“Students and staff were extremely generous. Some donated $5, $10 or $20 because they felt compelled to assist those in need,” said Beth Coyne, assistant director of Co-Curricular Programs.

Associate Director of Residential Life Amy Boyle said, “I am impressed with the student commitment, given the short time span between our collections and the end of school. Loyola students and staff are happy to give in any circumstance.”
