Council receives Jesuit All-Academic Honorable Mention
April 15, 2011
Loyola University New Orleans junior guard Keiva Council has been awarded an honorable mention spot on the 2010-11 National Jesuit All-Academic Team, as announced by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities national office.
Council, who last week was named to the National All-Jesuit Team, joins Boston College’s Carolyn Swords as the only two players to be recognized by the AJCU for achievement both on and off the court.
Council is a sociology major at Loyola and has accumulated a 3.57 grade point average. Earlier this season, Council was named an NAIA Scholar Athlete and earned a spot on the SSAC All-Academic Team.
On the court, Council had one of the best seasons ever recorded at Loyola. She averaged 16.9 points, 6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2 steals per game. She led the team in points, assists, steals and blocks. Her 541 points scored was the fifth-highest total in team history. She set the school record for most points in a game with 43 against Dillard on Feb. 8, and she currently sits in sixth place on LU’s all-time scoring list with 1175 points.
Council’s efforts on the hardwood helped earn her honorable mention spots on the WBCA’s and NAIA’s All-American teams, and SSAC All-Conference and All-Tournament teams.
The Jesuit Basketball Spotlight pilot project is a nationwide effort to bring greater positive awareness to Jesuit education and mission. This project was developed by the Association of Jesut Colleges and Universities in response to member institutions wanting to spread the word of Jesuit higher education through the more than 90 basketball games in which Jesuit institutions play each other (men and women) this year. You can find more information on the project at http://www.ajcunet.edu/jesuitbasketball.
