Last week to receive free tax help from VITA
April 8, 2011
The Loyola University New Orleans College of Law is offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program as a way to provide free tax preparation assistance for people with low to moderate incomes.
The sessions, designed by the Internal Revenue Service, continue through Thursday, April 14. Hours for the tax preparation sessions are Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., and Mondays and Thursdays from 5 – 7 p.m. The VITA office is located at Loyola University New Orleans College of Law, Broadway Activities Center, 501 Pine St., Room 202.
VITA will also offer tax preparation this Saturday, April 9 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the Community Center of St. Bernard Parish, located at 1111 LeBeau St., Arabi, La. 70032. For more information on sessions in Arabi, call 504-281-2512.
Most VITA volunteers at Loyola are either Loyola students or former students. Lindsey Bolton, a second-year law student at Loyola and one of the volunteers says the VITA program gives low income households an alternative in preparing their taxes.
“They don’t have to rely on online programs. There is so much room for error with those types of things. You have another option,” Bolton said.
Visitors looking for help may be hesitant to let a student prepare documents as important as their taxes, but backup is always readily available. “We’ve got very experienced reviewers sitting nearby, looking at every return before it goes through. They’re getting very good quality service,” said Bolton.
Those attending tax preparation sessions should bring identification, Social Security cards for each member of their household, tax returns and all other tax documents, including W-2 forms, 1099 forms and Social Security statements.
Loyola’s VITA Program is affiliated with the Asset Building Coalition of Southeast Louisiana and the American Bar Association.
