Loyola University New Orleans will honor its legendary baseball coach Louis “Rags” Scheuermann with a scholarship that will provide student-athletes with funding necessary to succeed in their academic and athletic careers. A fundraiser for the scholarship will take place on Thursday, April 14, 7-10 p.m. at the Harrah’s Casino New Orleans Theatre. Tickets are $100 (admits 2) or $1,000 for a VIP table of 10.

The university is calling on “Rags' team” - family, friends, former players and New Orleans baseball enthusiasts - to help it reach its $60,000 goal needed to endow the fund. This scholarship will provide vital funding for student-athletes in the Loyola Wolfpack baseball program. Financial concerns weigh heavily on the ultimate success of these students. With endowed scholarship resources to benefit the program's student-athletes, Loyola will continue to fulfill its mission of attracting and successfully graduating a diverse student body, while offering them the opportunity to compete and develop on the intercollegiate level through the game of baseball, which meant so much to Scheuermann.

From 1957 to 1972, Coach Scheuermann led the Wolfpack baseball team to unprecedented heights, winning 234 games and compiling an impressive .649 winning percentage. He has been widely recognized for his influence on the game of baseball and the many lives he touched.

Athletic scholarships were eliminated when Loyola disbanded its intercollegiate athletic program in 1972. Loyola brought back athletics in the 1990s and reinstated athletic scholarships in 2004. The Coach Louis “Rags” Scheuermann Scholarship will be the first scholarship for Wolfpack baseball since the athletic scholarship program was reinstated.
