Loyola celebrates 'Music in our Schools' month

March 25, 2011

The National Association of Music Education recognizes March as “Music in Our Schools” month, and Loyola University New Orleans College of Music and Fine Arts will celebrate this by sponsoring a series of lectures recognizing the importance of music as a core subject in school curricula. This year’s speakers for the Loyola Music Education Lecture Series are Baruck Whitehead, Ph.D., associate professor of music education at Ithaca College, and Bruce Pearson, Ph.D., music educator and author. All events are free and open to the public.

On Friday, March 25, at 3:30 p.m., Whitehead will give an Orff-Schulwerk workshop demonstrating new techniques with Orff instruments in the Communications/Music Complex, Room 204G.

Pearson will present a series of lectures on March 26, beginning at 9 a.m. in Nunemaker Auditorium, located in Monroe Hall. Pearson’s lecture schedule is as follows:

  • 9 a.m. - Teaching Band with Excellence: Achieving the Most in Every Lesson
  • 10 a.m. - Effectively Using Technology in Beginning and Developing Band Classes
  • 11:15 a.m. - Question & Answer Session with Undergraduate Music Education Majors
  • 1 p.m. - Why Music Is Basic: The Value of Music Education
  • 2 p.m. - Principles of Expressive Playing in Music: Bringing Life to the Notes with Young Ensembles

The events are sponsored by Loyola’s Biever Guest Lecture Series and by Kjos Music Publishing.
