Scholarship banquet raises funds for international students
March 18, 2011
The Center for International Education at Loyola University New Orleans invites the Loyola community to the International Student Scholarship Banquet on Friday, March 25, at 6 p.m., in the St. Charles Room located in the Danna Student Center.
The scholarship banquet is an annual fundraiser for international students on F-1 visas who are ineligible for need-based or federal financial aid. Each year, the International Student Association and the Center for International Education, which sponsor the banquet, highlight a country to showcase and celebrate its food, culture and crafts.
This year, Mexico is the theme country and attendees will enjoy authentic Mexican food, traditional folk dancing performed by Loyola student Isis Huizar, music performed by Loyola alumna Lourdes Reeks ’06, and a silent auction with items from around the world.
Tickets are $20 each or $35 per couple, and $140 for a table of eight. All proceeds benefit the International Student Scholarship Fund.
The keynote speaker will be professor of mass communication Larry Lorenz, Ph.D., Loyola’s A. Louis Read Distinguished Professor in Mass Communication. He has lectured at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City (1992, 1993, 1994) as part of a faculty exchange agreement. Lorenz has taught at Loyola since 1981 and was chair of the former Department of Communications and founding dean of the College of Social Sciences, and received the university’s Dux Academicus Award in 2009. Lorenz was a newsman with United Press International during the turbulent 1960s, and since 1987, has been host of the public affairs program “Informed Sources,” on WYES-TV. A former president of the Press Club of New Orleans, he was awarded the club’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.
