DNP program offers convenience, affordability to working nurses

March 11, 2011

Loyola University New Orleans School of Nursing is gaining a lot of attention because of the convenience and affordability of its newly-implemented Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program.

According to director of the School of Nursing, Ann H. Cary, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.N., A-CCC, they've already seen 50 applications for the DNP program this year and expects that number to rise.

"The complexity of health care delivery, the multiplicity of health care providers and systems, and the needs of our patients demand that our most highly educated nurses lead the systems of tomorrow," said Cary. "Systems thinking and translating the most important evidence in a timely manner assures our patients of world-class care. Loyola is proud to contribute to the education of the next generation of nursing leaders."

Affordability is a main component in seeing an increase of nursing applicants nationwide, according to Cary. The Nurse Faculty Loan Repayment Program pays up to 85 percent of graduate degree loans in return for four years of full-time employment as a faculty member in a U.S. school of nursing upon graduation.

Nursing student Michelle Midkiff says the accessibility to federal grants, as well as the convenience of online courses is the main reason she is back in school.

"Participation in the NFLP affords me the opportunity to obtain a Doctorate of Nursing Practice while maintaining financial stability," Midkiff said. "This program is a great avenue which encourages nurse practitioners to further their education and support our profession, while maintaining a full-time job."

The deadline for early-decision application for the 2011-12 DNP online program is Nov. 1, 2011. Application and detailed program information are available at http://css.loyno.edu/nursing/doctor-nursing-practice.
