Trial Advocacy Program holds inaugural fundraiser
March 11, 2011
The Loyola University New Orleans College of Law Trial Advocacy Program will hold its inaugural fundraiser, “Bowl-O-Contendere,” on Friday, March 18, at 7 p.m. at Rock ‘n’ Bowl. Tickets are $45 for students or $65 for professionals. A ticket includes food catered by Ye Old College Inn, open bar serving premium beverages and cover charge for Kermit Ruffins who plays at 9:30 p.m. Online payment is available at http://www.loyno.edu/bursar/pay/142.
This event serves as the Trial Advocacy Program’s principle fundraiser for the academic year and will allow students to be exposed to lawyers, judges and business professionals throughout the New Orleans and surrounding areas. Money raised will allow for further development of the program, including costs of traveling to mock trial competitions throughout the United States.
The Trial Advocacy Program, established in 1982, prepares students for a smooth transition from the study of law to actual practice. The program focuses on learning by doing with practical instruction, demonstrations, feedback and critique. It teaches students the strategy of a trial and how to conduct themselves in a courtroom setting, how to speak persuasively, conduct direct and cross examinations, prepare and present persuasive opening and closing arguments, proper impeachment, tendering of experts and introduction of evidence.
During the 2009-10 school year the team enjoyed success in numerous competitions, including placing first at the Quinnipiac Trial Advocacy Competition and as a semi-finalist at the Texas Young Lawyer’s Association Trial Advocacy Competition. With these wins, the team secured a spot in the prestigious American Bar Association National Criminal Justice Trial Competition and placed third overall.
