'Treme's' Wendell Pierce to deliver unified commencement address
Award-winning actor Wendell Pierce will address Loyola University New Orleans' Class of 2011 during its unified commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 14, at 9:45 a.m. in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The star of HBO's "Treme" series will also receive an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters during commencement exercises. Pierce joins Loyola's other honorary degree recipients including National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Administrator Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D., legendary music producer Cosimo Matassa, and New Orleans businessman and Loyola trustee emeritus John B. Levert Jr.
Verchick joins Obama in launching conservation initiative
Robert Verchick, Loyola University New Orleans College of Law professor, joined President Barack Obama on Wednesday to celebrate the launching of his conservation initiative, "America's Great Outdoors," in a ceremony held in the East Room of the White House. Verchick served on an inter-agency AGO workgroup and was a contributing author of the report submitted to the President.
Loyola students help bridge the communication gap for Latinos
Loyola University New Orleans students are helping to fill the gap for the underserved New Orleans Latino population through their work with Casa Oportunidades NOLA, an adult education and community outreach center.
Loyola Theatre presents local approach of 'Waiting for Godot'
The Loyola University New Orleans Department of Theatre Arts and Dance will lend a local flair to their upcoming approach of Samuel Beckett's brilliant comedy "Waiting for Godot," which runs Feb. 18, and 19, at 8 p.m. and Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. in the Lower Depths Theater.
George Winston concert to benefit Catholic Charities oil spill relief
Renowned pianist George Winston will perform a benefit concert at Loyola University New Orleans to help families affected by the BP/Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The concert takes place Saturday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Loyola's Roussel Hall.
Conference challenges students to make positive changes
The Office of Co-Curricular Programs at Loyola University New Orleans presents the Student Leader Initiative conference, Saturday, Feb. 19, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. The conference is free and open to all Loyola students. Lunch will be provided.
Archaeology lecture addresses imperial boot styles
Connie Rodriguez, Ph.D., associate professor of classical studies at Loyola, will be the featured speaker at the next Archaeological Institute of America national lecture in New Orleans. The lecture, "Dress Boots of the Roman Emperors," takes place Monday, Feb. 21, at 8 p.m. in Nunemaker Auditorium.
Law professor from Greece lectures at Loyola next week
The Loyola University New Orleans College of Law and the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation present "Legal Protection of Cultural Heritage: A Human Rights Based Approach," a lecture by professor Anastasia Grammaticaki-Alexiou of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki School of Law in Greece. The lecture takes place Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 3:30 p.m. in the College of Law, Room 112.
Grad Fair brings the bling, and more, for graduating students
It's that time of year again! Graduating students can shop 'til they drop and gather important commencement information at the 2011 Graduate Fair on Tuesday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. in the St. Charles Room in the Danna Student Center. The Graduate Fair for law students will be held Wed., March 2.
Boileau memorial service set for Feb. 25
A memorial service remembering the life and legacy of the Rev. David A. Boileau, Ph.D., professor emeritus and former chair of the philosophy department, will be held Friday, Feb. 25, at 4 p.m. in Ignatius Chapel, located in Bobet Hall. Boileau died Jan. 24 following a long illness. He was 80 years old.
Program builds confidence for women to lead in student government
For the second year in a row Loyola University New Orleans will host the training program, "Elect Her – Campus Women Win." The session is Saturday, Feb. 26, from 10:30 a.m. –3 p.m. in the St. Charles Room in the Danna Student Center.
Film screening and discussion to bring attention to war in Uganda
The Loyola University New Orleans Community Action Program and the Office of University Ministry present "The Invisible Children: Congo Tour," a discussion and film screening with the Invisible Children organization, created to bring peace and awareness about the Ugandan war, one of the longest-running wars on the African continent.
College of Music and Fine Arts dean concertizes, publishes review
Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., dean of Loyola's College of Music and Fine Arts, recently completed a performance tour of Bach's "Goldberg Variations" in November which included appearances at Texas State University, Del Mar College, Loyola University Maryland and Loyola University New Orleans.
Loyola's Council named National Jesuit Player of the Week
Loyola University New Orleans women's basketball player Keiva Council was named the National Jesuit Player of the Week by the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight for her record-setting performance last week.
Black History Month celebration continues
Loyola University New Orleans' Black Student Union, along with the Office of Student Affairs, will celebrate Black History Month with a series of musical performances, field trips and lectures.
