Loyola Theatre presents local approach of 'Waiting for Godot'
February 11, 2011
The Loyola University New Orleans Department of Theatre Arts and Dance will lend a local flair to their upcoming approach of Samuel Beckett's brilliant comedy “Waiting for Godot.” The production will be set in the Louisiana coastal wetlands, a location recently spoiled by the BP/Deepwater Horizon oil spill and decades of other pollution and ecological circumstances.
“Waiting for Godot” runs Feb. 16, 17, 18, and 19, at 8 p.m. and Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. in the Lower Depths Theater, located in the Communications/Music Complex, on the corner of St. Charles Avenue and Calhoun Street.
Tickets are $12 for general admission and $8 for students, seniors and Loyola employees and are available online at www.montage.loyno.edu or by calling the Loyola Box Office at 504-865-2074. Tickets will also be available 30 minutes prior to each performance at the door while supplies last.
In this production, assistant professor of theatre and director Laura Hope, Ph.D., stresses the scripted humor and the sadness of the ecological dilemmas facing south Louisiana. Grotesquely beautiful and utterly absorbing, “Waiting for Godot” is a bitter yet comic portrait of the dogged resilience of man's spirit in the face of little hope.
Following the oil spill which has decimated their fish, former coastal fishermen Vladimir and Estragon find themselves employed to clean the wetlands with paper towels. They are “Waiting for Godot,” a mysterious figure who will neither explain their perpetual insignificance nor put an end to it.
