Baquet's photographs showcase a 'New Orleans no more'
January 28, 2011
Local photographer Harold Baquet will share photographs of a ‘New Orleans no more’ with his upcoming exhibit, “In the Blink of an Eye," which opens at Loyola University New Orleans’ Collins C. Diboll Art Gallery on Thursday, Feb. 3, and runs through March 24.
Baquet will precede the exhibit opening with a lecture that evening at 5 p.m. in Miller Hall, Room 114. An opening reception will follow in the art gallery, which is located on the fourth floor of Monroe Library. Admission to the lecture and exhibit is free and open to the public.
“In the Blink of an Eye” consists of photographs representing the 30-year span of Baquet’s career as a New Orleans photographer. The exhibit was inspired by Baquet’s recent book publication, “In the Blink of an Eye: Photographic Memories of a New Orleans No More,” co-written by his wife, Cheron Brylski.
“Because we lost so much from Hurricane Katrina, a photograph can be all you have of a memory,” said Baquet. “And that’s the effectiveness of photography as a medium: the ability to snap you back to a moment when you are actually there, not just visually, but emotionally...in the blink of an eye, black and white, just light, line, and form is enough, and it allows you to explore what was.”
Baquet, who has served as Loyola’s university photographer for more than 21 years, has had his work featured in Rolling Stone, the book “The Last Hayride” by John Maginnis, and in several museums in New Orleans, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. This exhibition is made possible by the generous support of Adams and Reese L.L.P. and Mr. Charles F. Gay Jr.
