Loyola students and alumni finish strong in recent competitions

Loyola University New Orleans College of Music and Fine Arts students and alumni recently competed in regional competitions with fantastic results.
Music junior Adam Mayon took top honors in the piano division of the Music Teachers National Association’s Young Artist Performance competition south-central regional level, held in Norman, Okla. Mayon represented the state of Louisiana in the competition which consisted of collegiate competitors of both undergraduate and graduate levels, and he will now move on to the national competition on March 28 in Milwaukee, Wis. Mayon is a student of John Murphy, D.M.A., Loyola professor of piano.
Loyola vocal students and alumni competed in the Metropolitan Opera Gulf Coast Regional Auditions held Jan. 23 at Loyola. Vocal senior Jamez McCorkle won second place and alumnus Casey Candebat ’09 took third place. Vocal senior David Castillo was awarded a $500 finalist prize. Castillo is a student of Philip Frohnmayer, Loyola professor of voice.
In November, McCorkle also won the Mather Scholarship Competition, sponsored by the Singers’ Club of Cleveland, which included 16 vocalists from across the country. McCorkle is also a student of Frohnmayer and previously studied with Loyola alumna Ruth Falcon ’64 at The New School for Music at Mannes College in New York City.
