Loyola Opera Theatre will present a story of bigotry, desire and murder in its upcoming production of Carlisle Floyd’s “Susannah.” The story is loosely based on the biblical account of “Susannah and the Elders” and is considered a timeless exploration of human fallibility.
Music director Carol Rausch and stage director Octavio Cardenas lead the cast and live orchestra in two performances on Feb. 12, at 7:30 p.m., and Feb. 13, at 3 p.m., in Roussel Performance Hall located in the Communications/Music Complex on the corner of Calhoun Street and St. Charles Avenue.
“Susannah” centers around a 1950s backwoods Tennessee community as it turns on a beautiful and free-spirited young outsider when she is spied bathing in the baptismal creek. A charismatic itinerant preacher tries to save her, but in the process comes face to face with his own hypocrisy. This modern operatic masterpiece uses American fiddle tunes and musical folk style to weave a tale of bigotry, jealousy, lust, seduction, betrayal and revenge.
