December 10, 2010

The Loyola University New Orleans College of Music and Fine Arts recently announced the winners of the 2010-11 Loyola Concerto/Aria Competition. For the competition finals, 10 students competed for two top spots. This year’s winners are Michael Bennett, piano performance sophomore from Lake Charles, and Sue Celestin, violin performance senior from Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

The winners will perform with the Loyola Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, April 10, at 3 p.m. in Roussel Hall. Bennett will play Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major and Celestin will perform Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, Op. 61 in D major.

“The preparation and quality of performance by all finalists were excellent,” said Jean Montés, D.M.A., director of Loyola orchestras. “We should all take pride in the level of music making that is taking place here at Loyola.”

Competition judges included Jonathan Gerhart, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra principal cellist; Jeneta Mavrova, LPO violinist; Robert Nunez, LPO principal tubist; Ryan Rice, LPO principal flutist; Farrar Hudkins, WWNO host and interim music director and Valerie Frances, Nicholls State University voice faculty.
