International Student Association hosts Country Fair
October 8, 2010
|A performance from the 2009 Country Fair.|
Which country has an ice hotel? How many characters must one learn in order to read a Japanese newspaper? Which country is the largest exporter of black peppers?
Find out the answers to these and many other questions at Loyola University New Orleans’ annual Country Fair, Friday, Oct. 22, sponsored by the International Student Association and the Center for International Education. The fair, featuring food from around the world and displays from more than 25 countries, takes place from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. in the Peace Quad. In the case of rain, festivities will move inside to the Danna Student Center’s St. Charles Room.
The event is designed to introduce the campus community to different countries’ cultures, and to raise money for the International Student Scholarship Fund. Organizers will sell raffle tickets to benefit the fund at the fair. This free event showcases Loyola's diverse international community and gives students, faculty and staff the opportunity to spend the afternoon "traveling" the world, without leaving campus.
Loyola students will set up tables to showcase a variety of items from either their home countries or countries in which they have studied, with flags, photographs, native clothing, artifacts and food. Cuisine from a variety of countries, including Belgium, Italy and Japan will be featured.
Traditional Brazilian dance troupe Casa Samba will perform during the fair, combining traditional Brazilian music, vocals, theater, dance and drumming to capture the spirit of Afro Brazilian heritage and history.
