SGA to hold forum on worker's rights

October 1, 2010

Loyola University New Orleans Student Government Association, in conjunction with Student Affairs, will hold “A Voice for Everyone,” a panel discussion intended to educate the Loyola Community on issues related to collective bargaining and union representation for contract employees. The event is scheduled at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5th, in Roussel Hall.

The forum will address the issue of worker’s rights and the right to unionize on campus. Recently, the Service Employees International Union has encouraged Sodexo Loyola workers, who manage many of the university’s food services, to unionize.

“The purpose of our forum is to have an honest, respectful dialogue about an issue that both sides feel very strongly about," SGA President Kate Gremillon said.

The forum, moderated by Gremillion, will include six panelists: Helene O’Brien, president of SEIU Local 21; Tom Mackall, vice president of employee and corporate relations, Sodexo; J.C. Berendzen, representative, Faculty Senate; Pam Occhipinti, representative, Loyola Staff Senate; Garrett Fontenot, spokesperson, Loyola SGA; and the Rev. Fred Kammer, S.J., Jesuit Social Research Institute.

Following introductions and establishing ground rules for the discussion, each member of the panel will have three minutes to speak on worker’s rights issues and how they are being applied on Loyola’s campus.

The event will also include a question and answer period with the audience as time allows. A reception will follow allowing participants to continue the discussion in a more informal setting.
