Team Loyola makes strides in the fight against breast cancer
October 1, 2010
Loyola University New Orleans students, faculty, staff and friends will join together for the third year as “Team Loyola” to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event.
Participants will join Loyola mascot, Havoc, on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 8 a.m., by the Enrique Alferez fountain at the end of the Botanical Gardens in City Park for the walking event. The event remembers those who have died from breast cancer, expresses hope to those who are still fighting the disease and celebrates those who have beat cancer.
“Team Loyola” welcomes the entire university community to walk as part of their team. Sub-teams or team names can be created for individual organizations, offices or schools. Already created teams include the School of Nursing, Residential Life and the Women’s Resource Center.
To register, visit the New Orleans Making Strides website and choose “sign up.” Participants will then be able to choose to join Loyola’s team, “Team Loyola,” and create or join a team name. The walk is free to all participants and encourages teams and individuals to help raise money for the American Cancer Society.
“We are all excited to be coming together as a team for the third year in a row for this important event. It has been a great way for Loyola to go out in the community and support the fight against breast cancer,” said Karen Reichard, Ph.D., director of Loyola’s Women’s Resource Center.
Adopted in 2003, Making Strides has brought together more than six million walkers in more than 145 communities to raise more than $400 million to fight breast cancer. Last year “Team Loyola” raised over $1,300.
