Philosopher gives lecture on acts of kindness at Loyola

October 1, 2010

Award-winning author and philosopher William S. Hamrick, Ph.D., professor emeritus of philosophy at Southern Illinois University, will give a lecture at Loyola University New Orleans, "The Challenge of Kindness and the Phenomenon of Shame.”

Hamrick's talk will address a difficulty that can arise with kindness. He argues that an act of kindness can be transformed into a hurtful action if it occurs within a certain social, political or economic context that exploits others.

The lecture takes place Thursday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. in Bobet Hall, Room 332. The event, sponsored by the Biever Guest Lecture Series, is free and open to the public.

“Hamrick will also discuss the nature of shame and its relation to kindness,” said Francis Coolidge, Ph.D., associate professor of philosophy. “He will show how kind acts are threatened by an absence of shame in contemporary life: the absence of shame in those who engage in acts of irresponsible power.”

Hamrick is the author or editor of four books, including “Kindness and the Good Society: Connections of the Heart,” which won the 2004 Edward Ballard Book Prize in phenomenology. He has also published more than 30 articles in scholarly books or journals and is associate editor of the Journal of the British Society of Phenomenology.
